Firoz Merchant, the Mumbai-born founder and chairman of Dubai’s Pure Gold Group, has generously contributed AED 1 million (approximately INR 2.25 crore) to the Dubai Charity Association. This donation is earmarked to support kidney patients undergoing dialysis and to facilitate the release of prisoners who have completed their sentences but remain incarcerated due to unpaid fines.
Khalid Al Olama, Secretary General of the Dubai Charity Association, expressed gratitude for Firoz Merchant’s contribution, highlighting its significance beyond mere financial assistance. He emphasized that this act reflects Pure Gold Group’s commitment to social responsibility and community welfare, enabling the expansion of healthcare services and assistance to more patients.
Firoz Merchant acknowledged the association’s dedication to humanitarian causes and underscored his belief in universal access to quality medical care. He expressed satisfaction in being able to contribute to community service through this initiative.
A Legacy of Giving Back
Since 2008, Firoz Merchant’s “Forgotten Society” initiative has facilitated the release of over 20,000 prisoners in the UAE by covering their debts and arranging their repatriation. In 2024 alone, he donated substantial funds to free 900 prisoners ahead of Ramadan. Additionally, in 2017, he committed an annual sum of US $130,790 to support the repatriation of prisoners to their home countries.
Firoz Merchant’s philanthropic efforts are deeply rooted in his personal experiences. Having faced financial hardships that led him to leave school and move to the UAE, he built a successful jewellery business and now dedicates himself to aiding the underprivileged in society. His commitment ensures that prisoners can reunite with their families before Ramadan, with his organization also covering their travel expenses.
Through these endeavors, Firoz Merchant exemplifies the spirit of giving and community support, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
